    Artist Statement

My art is inspired by the beauty and power of the landscape and creative energy of fellow artists, which are plentiful all around me as a washashore on Cape Cod, reflecting on the effects of my heritage on my world view, and recently by vivid memories of warm winter sojourns to Puerto Rico and Mexico. I have explored a variety of mediums, but I am especially drawn to the vibrancy and immediacy of working with pastel. Using soft pastel on sanded papers or textured boards and acrylic or watercolor underpaintings, I strive to show a range of effects and emotions through my art. Inspiration in these turbulent times comes from an undying belief in our will to survive and prevail and to use my art as a means of expression.

Elinor Freedman, an artist from north of Boston, is a Cape Cod washashore where she is inspired by the beauty of the landscape and creative energy of fellow artists. While Ellie has explored a variety of mediums, she is drawn to the vibrancy and immediacy of working with pastel.

Using soft pastel on sanded papers or textured boards and acrylic or watercolor underpaintings, Ellie’s pastels show a range of effects that bring her paintings to life. Her works have appeared in numerous juried exhibitions in New England and New York. She is represented by Eastwind Gallery, Orleans, MA, Elburne and the Shop at the Cape Cod Museum of Art, Dennis, MA.

Ellie is a juried master artist at the Cape Cod Art Center, Barnstable, MA, a juried member of the National Association of Women Artists, and an associate member of the Pastel Society of America as well as a member of the Yarmouth Art Guild, Cotuit Center for the Arts, Arts Foundation of Cape Cod, Arts Collaborative of Wakefield, the Connecticut Pastel Society, Pastel Society of New Hampshire and the Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod for which she has served as a board member and coordinates a scholarship program for high school students who aspire to careers in the arts.

A life-long learner, Ellie has benefitted from numerous classes and workshops from highly respected artists. Ellie also serves as a docent and co-facilitator of docent training at the Cape Cod Museum of Art and collaborates with docents to curate museum exhibits highlighting the museum’s permanent collection.
