Duxbury Clipper - Around Town

Sianna Richards, DHS Class of 2024, has been selected by the Board of Directors to receive this year’s Helen Bumpus Gallery annual art scholarship. Each year the Gallery awards a $500 grant to a graduating Duxbury senior to encourage continued study in the visual arts. While enrollment in a college degree program is not necessary, the study must be part of a recognized/certified course. Applicants are not required to attend the local high school, but they must be residents of Duxbury.

For additional information about the scholarship and to view a sampling of Sianna’s artwork, please visit helenbumpusgallery.com.

Fun art at Bumpus Gallery

Duxbury Clipper - July 3, 2024

This summer, visitors to Duxbury Free Library are in for a visual treat as soon as they step inside Helen Bumpus Gallery, located opposite the circulation desk on DFL's main floor.  "Real and Imagined" paintings by Tony Andrade, the Gallery's July - August exhibit, features tow distinct bodies of work:  realistic landscapes and abstract, imagined gardens.  The colorful show includes several of the new approaches to painting Andrade has been exploring over the past few years.  Helen Bumpus Gallery offers visitors to Andrade's Duxbury show the opportunity to enjoy that same fun and excitement.  "Real and Imagined" runs through Aug. 30.

Further details, including a sneak peek at the artwork in the exhibit are available at helenbumpusgallery.com

Duxbury Clipper - February 28, 2024

Helen Bumpus Gallery, Paintings – In “Presence of Light,” artist Elizabeth Slayton’s paintings appear to move from realistic detail to open unbounded space and back again. Her paintings are always about light, Slayton said.  In addition to the large scale, non-traditional, realistic oils Slayton has been painting over the last several years, the Bumpus show includes paintings from a new, more abstract series with expansive and unrestrained new energy, color and depth. The exhibit opens March 1 and runs through the end of April 2024.

Duxbury Clipper - January 10, 2024

Helen Bumpus Gallery, Paintings – In the exhibit “Unfolding Time,” South Shore artist  Stephanie Roberts-Camello draws connections  between family mementos and her abstract, 3-D  encaustic paintings.  Roberts-Camello incorporates letters she found from the 1920s through the 1940s written by members of her family, who were cowboys and farmers in West Texas. Once Roberts-Camello incorporated those letters into her paintings,  she began to see them as metaphors for struggles, endurance, and change – a tangible reference to the passing of time. The exhibit runs through the end of February. The gallery is located at Duxbury Free Library.
